The Density Difference: Why Pea Gravel is Lighter

If you use a standard driveway gravel calculator to estimate pea gravel, you will order too much material.

Standard #57 crushed stone weighs 2,800 pounds per cubic yard. The stones are jagged and lock tightly together, leaving very little air between them.

Pea gravel, however, has spent thousands of years tumbling in rivers, wearing the edges perfectly smooth. When you pile round stones together, they cannot interlock. The Zero Compaction Rule

In traditional construction estimation, you always add a 10% "Compaction Factor" or "Waste Factor" to your order, because running a heavy compactor over the stones causes the driveway to shrink in depth.

Common Pea Gravel Applications & Depths

The secret to a successful pea gravel installation is controlling the depth. Pouring it too shallow will expose the dirt underneath. Pouring it too deep will make it exhausting to walk through.

1. Dog Runs (Recommended Depth: 3 to 4 Inches)

Pea gravel is the ultimate surface for dog kennels and runs. The smooth stones will not cut a dog's paw pads like crushed stone, and urine drains instantly through the rocks into the soil below, preventing mud pits and foul odors. Solid feces sits cleanly on top of the stones, making it extremely easy to scoop.

2. Playgrounds (Recommended Depth: 6 to 12 Inches)

Pea gravel is an excellent, low-maintenance alternative to wood mulch for swing sets and playgrounds. To provide adequate shock absorption for falling children, you need a massive amount of volume. Most municipal codes require a minimum of 9 to 12 inches of depth under high-fall areas like monkey bars.

3. Decorative Garden Beds (Recommended Depth: 2 Inches)

When used as a weed-suppressing mulch around shrubs and planters, keep the depth shallow. Two inches is plenty to hide the landscape fabric underneath. Anything deeper is a waste of money and makes planting new flowers difficult.

4. Walking Paths (Recommended Depth: 1.5 to 2 Inches)
