Pea gravel is arguably the most popular decorative aggregate in residential landscaping. It is inexpensive, drains water instantly, and offers a smooth, natural aesthetic that jagged crushed stone cannot match.
However, accurately estimating the amount of pea gravel you need is the difference between a cheap weekend DIY project and an expensive logistical nightmare.

The Density Difference: Why Pea Gravel is Lighter
If you use a standard driveway gravel calculator to estimate pea gravel, you will order too much material.
Standard #57 crushed stone weighs 2,800 pounds per cubic yard. The stones are jagged and lock tightly together, leaving very little air between them.
Pea gravel, however, has spent thousands of years tumbling in rivers, wearing the edges perfectly smooth. When you pile round stones together, they cannot interlock. This creates massive pockets of void space (air) between the rocks. Because of this trapped air, one cubic yard of pea gravel weighs only 2,600 pounds (1.3 tons).

The Zero Compaction Rule
In traditional construction estimation, you always add a 10% "Compaction Factor" or "Waste Factor" to your order, because running a heavy compactor over the stones causes the driveway to shrink in depth.
You cannot compact pea gravel.
Because the stones act like tiny ball bearings, running a vibratory plate compactor over them will accomplish absolutely nothing—the stones will simply roll out of the way of the machine. Therefore, we have intentionally hardcoded the compaction factor in this calculator to 0%.
If the geometry of your dog run requires 1.3 Cubic Yards of volume, you order exactly 1.3 Cubic Yards.
Common Pea Gravel Applications & Depths
The secret to a successful pea gravel installation is controlling the depth. Pouring it too shallow will expose the dirt underneath. Pouring it too deep will make it exhausting to walk through.
1. Dog Runs (Recommended Depth: 3 to 4 Inches)
Pea gravel is the ultimate surface for dog kennels and runs. The smooth stones will not cut a dog's paw pads like crushed stone, and urine drains instantly through the rocks into the soil below, preventing mud pits and foul odors. Solid feces sits cleanly on top of the stones, making it extremely easy to scoop.
2. Playgrounds (Recommended Depth: 6 to 12 Inches)
Pea gravel is an excellent, low-maintenance alternative to wood mulch for swing sets and playgrounds. To provide adequate shock absorption for falling children, you need a massive amount of volume. Most municipal codes require a minimum of 9 to 12 inches of depth under high-fall areas like monkey bars.
3. Decorative Garden Beds (Recommended Depth: 2 Inches)
When used as a weed-suppressing mulch around shrubs and planters, keep the depth shallow. Two inches is plenty to hide the landscape fabric underneath. Anything deeper is a waste of money and makes planting new flowers difficult.
4. Walking Paths (Recommended Depth: 1.5 to 2 Inches)
If you are using pea gravel for a pedestrian walkway, you must install a rigid border (like steel edging or brick) to contain the stones. Keep the depth very shallow (under 2 inches) so that your boots hit the firm dirt beneath the stones. If you pour a 4-inch path, your feet will sink with every step, feeling like you are walking on a dry beach.
The Retail Bag Reality
Because pea gravel is often used for small planter beds, homeowners frequently attempt to buy it at big-box retail stores like Home Depot or Lowe's.
Retail bags usually weigh 50 pounds. It takes exactly 40 bags to equal one ton.
