What Is an Age Calculator?
An age calculator is a tool that computes the exact time elapsed between a person's date of birth and a reference date (usually today). While calculating age sounds simple โ just subtract the birth year from the current year โ precise age calculation involves correctly handling months, days, and leap years to give you an accurate result down to the day, hour, or even minute.
Our free online age calculator shows you your age in multiple formats: years and months, total days, total weeks, total hours, and total minutes lived. It also tells you exactly how many days remain until your next birthday.
How Age Is Calculated: The Math Explained
Step 1: Calculate Complete Years
Count the number of full anniversaries of your birthday that have passed. If you were born on September 15, 1990, and today is June 27, 2026, you have completed 35 full years (your 35th birthday was on September 15, 2025, and your 36th hasn't happened yet).
Step 2: Calculate Remaining Months
After accounting for complete years, count the full months that have passed since your last birthday. From September 15 to June 27, that's 9 months (Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun โ partially).
Step 3: Calculate Remaining Days
Count the remaining days after accounting for the full months. From September 15 to June 27 is approximately 9 months and 12 days.
Total Age: 35 years, 9 months, and 12 days
Converting to Total Days
To find your total days lived:
- Count every day from birth to today, accounting for leap years
- A person born on January 1, 1990, would be 13,327 days old on June 27, 2026
- That includes 9 leap years (1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024)
Interesting Age Milestones

Why Accurate Age Calculation Matters
Legal and Financial Purposes
Age is a critical factor in many US laws and financial decisions:
- Social Security Benefits: Eligibility starts at age 62, with full benefits at 67
- Medicare: Automatic enrollment begins at 65
- Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs): Must begin withdrawing from retirement accounts at age 73
- Voting: Eligible at 18 years old
Medical Applications
Healthcare providers use precise age measurements to:
- Track child development milestones
- Calculate medication dosages (especially for children, where weight and age both matter)
- Screen for age-related conditions
- Calculate gestational age for pregnant patients
Genealogy and Family History
Researchers calculate ages to verify historical records, estimate birth years for ancestors, and build accurate family trees.
Fun Facts About Age and Time
- The average American lives approximately 79 years = 28,835 days = 692,040 hours
- A typical human heart beats about 2.5 billion times in a lifetime
- By age 70, you've slept approximately 23 years of your life
- The oldest verified person ever was Jeanne Calment of France, who lived 122 years, 164 days (born 1875, died 1997)
Age Calculation for Pets
Pet age doesn't work the same as human age. A common rule of thumb for dogs:
- First 2 years: Each dog year = ~10.5 human years
- After that: Each dog year = ~4 human years
So a 5-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 36-year-old human.
