What Is an Age Calculator?

An age calculator is a tool that computes the exact time elapsed between a person's date of birth and a reference date (usually today). While calculating age sounds simple โ€” just subtract the birth year from the current year โ€” precise age calculation involves correctly handling months, days, and leap years to give you an accurate result down to the day, hour, or even minute.

Our free online age calculator shows you your age in multiple formats: years and months, total days, total weeks, total hours, and total minutes lived. It also tells you exactly how many days remain until your next birthday.

How Age Is Calculated: The Math Explained

Step 1: Calculate Complete Years

Count the number of full anniversaries of your birthday that have passed. If you were born on September 15, 1990, and today is June 27, 2026, you have completed 35 full years (your 35th birthday was on September 15, 2025, and your 36th hasn't happened yet).

Step 2: Calculate Remaining Months

After accounting for complete years, count the full months that have passed since your last birthday. From September 15 to June 27, that's 9 months (Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun โ€” partially).

Step 3: Calculate Remaining Days

Count the remaining days after accounting for the full months. From September 15 to June 27 is approximately 9 months and 12 days.

Total Age: 35 years, 9 months, and 12 days

Converting to Total Days

To find your total days lived:

  • Count every day from birth to today, accounting for leap years
  • A person born on January 1, 1990, would be 13,327 days old on June 27, 2026
  • That includes 9 leap years (1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024)

Interesting Age Milestones

How Many Days Old Are You? (Age in Days Guide)

Why Accurate Age Calculation Matters

Legal and Financial Purposes

Age is a critical factor in many US laws and financial decisions:

  • Social Security Benefits: Eligibility starts at age 62, with full benefits at 67
  • Medicare: Automatic enrollment begins at 65
  • Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs): Must begin withdrawing from retirement accounts at age 73
  • Voting: Eligible at 18 years old

Medical Applications

Healthcare providers use precise age measurements to:

  • Track child development milestones
  • Calculate medication dosages (especially for children, where weight and age both matter)
  • Screen for age-related conditions
  • Calculate gestational age for pregnant patients

Genealogy and Family History

Researchers calculate ages to verify historical records, estimate birth years for ancestors, and build accurate family trees.

Fun Facts About Age and Time

  • The average American lives approximately 79 years = 28,835 days = 692,040 hours
  • A typical human heart beats about 2.5 billion times in a lifetime
  • By age 70, you've slept approximately 23 years of your life
  • The oldest verified person ever was Jeanne Calment of France, who lived 122 years, 164 days (born 1875, died 1997)

Age Calculation for Pets

Pet age doesn't work the same as human age. A common rule of thumb for dogs:

  • First 2 years: Each dog year = ~10.5 human years
  • After that: Each dog year = ~4 human years

So a 5-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 36-year-old human.

Frequently Asked Questions

To calculate your exact age, subtract your date of birth from today's date. Count the complete years first, then remaining months, then remaining days. Our calculator does this automatically and gives you your age in years, months, days, hours, and even minutes.
To find how many days old you are, multiply your completed years by 365, add days for leap years (366 days each), then add the remaining days. For example, a 30-year-old person is approximately 10,957 days old, not counting leap years. Our calculator gives you the precise number.
A leap year occurs every 4 years (with some exceptions for century years) and has 366 days instead of 365. This means people born on February 29 (leap day) technically only have a 'real' birthday every 4 years. For age calculation purposes, February 28 or March 1 is typically used in non-leap years.
To estimate age from birth year: Current Year - Birth Year = Approximate Age. However, this may be off by 1 year depending on whether their birthday has occurred yet this year. For example, someone born in 1990 is either 35 or 36 years old in 2026, depending on their birthday month.
Yes. Age in months = (Years ร— 12) + Remaining Months. Age in weeks = Total Days รท 7. For example, a 2-year-old (730 days old) is approximately 24 months or 104 weeks old.
You can use our age calculator to find your birth day of the week. Simply enter your date of birth and the calculator will show you what day of the week you were born on, along with other interesting age facts.
Chronological age is the simple number of years since you were born. Biological age refers to how old your body physically appears to be based on health markers like telomere length, organ function, and fitness level. You can be 50 chronologically but have the biological markers of a 40-year-old with good lifestyle habits.
Our age calculator automatically calculates the number of days until your next birthday. Simply enter your date of birth and the tool shows you the countdown. For example, if your birthday is on December 25 and today is June 27, there are 181 days until your next birthday.
In the United States, the full Social Security retirement age is 67 for people born in 1960 or later. Early retirement benefits can start at age 62, but with a permanent reduction. Medicare eligibility begins at age 65. You can use our age calculator to see exactly how many years until you reach these milestones.
In most Western countries, age is counted from the date of birth and increases by 1 on each birthday. In some East Asian cultures (particularly traditional Korean age-counting), a person is considered 1 year old at birth, and everyone's age increases on New Year's Day, not on individual birthdays.
